Most of us in Hobart would have probably gone down to the Taste of Tasmania, or at least know that its on ! Well, I love the Taste and I can't get enough of the food down there, love the local wallaby pizzas & pasties, and i cannot walk paste the Huon Valley Tempura mushrooms.
Sadly, Gunns has moved in and spoiled another Tassie festival/ icon.
While there are no signs at the taste that are easily visible, it is definitely sponsored by Gunns and much debate has gone on over teh paste week. unfortunately those who do not follow the papers closely would probably not even known and be enjoying the taste, where, if they had known Gunns was a major sponsor, would not be so happily enjoying the Taste. If you are like me, and do not agree with, or like the fact that the Taste of Tasmania, a festival that celebrates Tasmania and is the face of Tasmania at the Hobart end of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race, as well as the most acquired location for New Years Eve on the Hobart Docks - is being sponsored by the very compant who contributes to the destruction of Tasmania's natural resources, then please watch this space for the dialogue thats been going on and consider the following ways of demonstrating your objection:
1. Boycott the Taste of Tasmania & let them know why you have boycotted them (list of relevant bodies to email are below.
2. If you went to the Taste and didn't know it was sponsored by Gunns, and had you have known you would have gone, Boycott next years Tasts if the organisers choose to continue using Gunns as a sponsor, and write letters to the the relevant stakeholders/ organisations/ businesses/ government individuals to express this.
3. If you can't bear to stay away from the Taste, but are still unhappy / disgusted that the organisers have allowed Gunns to be a major sponsor, still write and express your opinion.
list of organisations you may like to email/ write a letter to:
(watch this space.... includes, Taste organisers, The Mercury Newspaper, Gunns, Tasmanian Labor Party, Hobart City Council, Store holders in the taste etc...)

Marti Zucco displays a curious form of logic in his letter regarding Gunns’ sponsorship of the Taste (Mercury 30/12). He suggests that because many daily items we use come from countries with poor environmental records we shouldn’t try to fix environmental problems here at home. I hope his idea does not extend to curb-side rubbish removal and recycling.
I’m sure if we looked hard enough we could find an ethical problem with almost all companies, does that mean we should give up trying to act ethically or holding people to account because ‘no one’s perfect’? The point is we all ought to do what’s in our power to make changes for the better.
I always enjoy attending the Taste but this year it was very easy for me to stay away. I refuse to support a festival that celebrates all the positive things about Tasmania while at the same time it is being destroyed.
I welcome Mr. Zucco’s challenge to find alternative sponsorship for the Taste and hope that the Hobart City Aldermen and the public can work together to find a more suitable sponsor for this great event.
more letters will be published here over the following days, pls feel free to comment as well.
